Where Has All of the Nylon Carpet Gone?
Well, well, well. It looks like a lot of the carpet mills are starting to discontinue nylon carpet. The average person would say "so what". But that's because they have no idea why nylon carpet is the best. The carpet mills have decided in their infinite wisdom to either discontinue nylon carpet or severely restrict nylon products. Why you ask! Because they cost more basically. They can sell polyester carpet for much less thereby creating the illusion of better value. Now, I will freely admit that polyester carpet has come a long way since the 1960's but the polyester yarn is inherently much less resilient. It has a lower melt level so when the mills apply the heat set (which holds in the twist in the yarn) they must do it at a lower heat temperature. This causes the yarn to set it's twist at a lower retention level. What does this mean to the average consumer? It means that the carpet yarn will untwist easier than nylon yarn which is twist set at a much higher temperature. The result is a carpet yarn that will unwind and "look" worn much sooner than nylon. Nylon is legendary for it's wear qualities and it's resiliency. Both of these attributes should be highly desirable but the mills go where the money is so polyester carpet is now the rage.......not!
Nuff said eh?
