Cleaning your carpet will remove small dirt and dust particles which could prematurely wear your new carpet so carpet cleaning is important. Even though officially, carpet manufacturers require regular carpet cleaning to keep their warranties intact, cleaning carpet can slowly degrade it. Carpets are made with two backings. The primary backing and the secondary backing. The primary backing is what the carpet yarn is sewn into. The secondary backing is then glued to the primary backing with a latex adhesive. This adds stability and a means to adhere the carpet to the tackstrips during installation. This adhesive layer (which is primarily latex, a water soluble substance) is where some degrading will take place. With steam cleaning, the carpet itself will take on quite a bit of moisture which can start to "loosen" the adhesive properties of the latex glue holding the two backings together. So cleaning your carpet can be the best and worst things you can do to your carpet. A conundrum of sorts to be sure!
